For Instructors

Book cover

For instructors who are thinking about how to use  The Joy of Stats, we have provided notes on Creating a Class Data Set and Using the PowerPoints from the website, as well as three sample syllabi:

  • 1. A syllabus for an online Introduction to Statistics course for the social sciences (this syllabus was developed during the COVID-19 shutdown, but it could be used in any online version of the course)
  • 2. A syllabus for an honors undergraduate course in statistics and data analysis (a required course, generally taken by students with non-science majors)
  • 3. A course outline for a graduate applied statistics in the social sciences course

With the new organization of The Joy of Stats intro four parts and twelve chapters, developing the syllabus around the book is quite straightforward.

  • In a quarter/trimester system, we suggest a pace of more or less one chapter for each of the 10 weeks of instruction; however, the first two chapters can be covered together in the first week, and Chapter 12 can be included in the last week.
  • In a semester system, extra time can be spent on Part Three (statistical inference) and the Regression and Compare Means chapters (8 and 9), which are the most challenging.

In a semester system, more time can be spent on small research problems (using the website data sets) and on looking at research articles in journals. Time can also be spent looking at reports for the non-expert in places like the Pew Research Center and Brookings Institution sites.
